Le cobaye est un herbivore strict. Son alimentation doit être composée essentiellement de foin, qui doit être de bonne qualité et proposé à volonté, et de verdure fraîche (herbe du jardin, pissenlits, feuilles de fraisiers…). Ces aliments sont riches en fibres, ce qui assure à la fois une bonne usure des dents et un bon équilibre du système digestif. Ils peuvent être accompagnés de légumes (donnés tous les jours) et de fruits (1 à 2 fois par semaine) et complétés éventuellement par des granulés (en petite quantité !), qui doivent alors être spécifiques pour cobaye et de bonne qualité. Il faut également apporter un supplément en Vitamine C. Pensez enfin à lui laisser de l’eau claire et propre à volonté, qu’il faudra changer régulièrement, et des éléments à ronger (brindilles, branchages…).
