La stérilisation permet avant tout d’écarter tout risque de gestation non souhaitée chez la chienne. Car une mise-bas implique des soins, et d’avoir réfléchi au placement des chiots, alors que beaucoup ont du mal à trouver une famille d’accueil.

Les chiennes font en moyenne une portée par an de 5 à 6 chiots. Mais la race influe sur la taille des portées, et certaines peuvent avoir jusqu’à 15 chiots en une seule fois!

La stérilisation fait aussi disparaître certains comportements indésirables, comme les grossesses nerveuses, et limite le risque d’apparition de certaines pathologies (par exemple infection de l’utérus ou des mamelles, tumeurs des ovaires…).

La stérilisation précoce permet de limiter très fortement le risque d’apparition de tumeurs mammaires, fréquentes chez la chienne.

La stérilisation est aussi intéressante en traitement (donc après l’apparition) de certaines pathologies, comme les infections de l’utérus ou des mamelles, ou dans le cas d’un diabète par exemple.

Nous vous recommandons de faire stériliser votre chienne avant ses premières chaleurs, dont la date varie en fonction de la taille du chien :
• Pour les petites races: entre 6 et 7 mois
• Pour les grandes races: entre 7 et 8 mois
• Pour les très grandes races: il est possible d’attendre 2 mois après les premières chaleurs pour attendre la fin de la croissance.

Quelle que soit la race, en cas de vaginite ou de vulve encapuchonnée, il faudra attendre 2 mois après la fin des premières chaleurs pour stériliser la chienne.

Si elle n’est pas encore identifiée, nous vous recommandons de le faire lors de la stérilisation: nous pourrons ainsi profiter de son anesthésie pour lui implanter sa puce électronique sans douleur.

Chez la femelle, la stérilisation chirurgicale consiste à retirer les ovaires: c’est ce qu’on appelle l’ovariectomie.
Pour des raisons médicales (infection de l’utérus…) ou dans le cas d’une gestation non désirée, il est parfois nécessaire de retirer l’utérus en même temps que les ovaires : c’est ce qu’on appelle l’ovario-hystérectomie.

Vous nous déposez votre animal le matin, à jeun. Après l’avoir examiné pour vérifier que tout va bien, nous le tranquilisons puis l’anesthésions avant de le préparer pour la chirurgie. A l’issue de l’intervention, nous lui injectons un anti-inflammatoire et un antalgique, puis nous surveillons son réveil. Vous pouvez le ramenez à la maison dès le soir dans la plupart des cas.

Vous devez ramener votre chienne à la clinique 10 à 12 jours après son opération pour un contrôle de la plaie de chirurgie et le retrait des points de suture.

Il est fréquent d’observer une prise de poids après la stérilisation. Il vous faudra donc peser régulièrement votre animal, lui faire faire de l’exercice, et penser à adapter son alimentation selon nos conseils.

Les femelles peuvent aussi parfois développer une incontinence urinaire dans les mois suivants la stérilisation (c’est en particulier le cas pour 20% des chiennes de race Boxer). Si c’est le cas de votre chienne, pas de panique! Des traitements existent et nous restons à votre disposition pour vous accompagner après la chirurgie.
